Charlotte Courthouse Project Hits Snag

The Charlotte County Court House project, prompted by the legal filings of Circuit court Judge Joel C. Cunningham against Charlotte County to either upgrade the historic court house or build a new facility has hit another snag.

As ordered by Circuit Court Judge Doherty last month The Charlotte Board appointed the five member panel as required by law. Although the panel has not convened and no plans have been presented objections are being made. In the same hearing the Charlotte County Museum board’s request to be part of the discussions was denied by Judge Doherty.

A brief has been filed by an attorney representing the Commonwealth of Virginia that objects to three of the members of the proposed panel as well as numerous other issues that have not occurred as yet. Although possible plans are being circulated the final decision will be made by the panel once it is in place.

Charlotte County intends to present its preferred plan to the community at Randolph-Henry auditorium Thursday evening October 31 at 7:00 pm. The public is invited.

It is important to note that county officials have no say in the final decision. Once the panel is convened the decisions will be made by them.

The Southside Messenger will report public hearing dates and official information regarding this issue as facts become available.
