Friends and neighbors joined Charlotte Court House Mayor Stephen Walker and the Town Council this past Sunday afternoon on the lawn of the historic courthouse building for the 26th Annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree. After an invocation by the Reverend Charles Maney of Mt. Tirzah Baptist Church, those gathered heard special music from Choral Conductor and Music Educator, Derrick Thompson. A teacher in the Charlotte County Public School system, Thompson has studied music and performed under some of the world’s greatest performers, conductors, and educators. As his rich baritone voice filled the cool evening air, one could imagine the angels themselves stopping to listen.

A highlight of the gathering is the Hometown Leader Award which is awarded each year to an individual who exemplifies leadership qualities in the community. Nominations are made by Charlotte Court House residents. This year the award was presented to Mr. Ennis Jones. Following is the letter nominating Ennis for the award.

Born and raised in Charlotte County, Ennis has been an integral part of the community for many years. With the exception of his college and military service years, he has lived in the county his entire life. For 25 years, he served the county as a deputy and process server in the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Department until his retirement.

Ennis is very active in this church, Madisonville Presbyterian, having served as a Sunday School teacher for most of his adult life as well as superintendent and elder for many terms.

Ennis and his wife, Nancy Carol, are both on the board and huge supporters of Young Life, a Christian group that has brought many young people to know the Lord. He opens his home to teens at 7:00 a.m. every Monday morning for their meetings and serves them breakfast. He has given not just of his time, but donated money for trips to Young Life camp at Rockbridge when a student would otherwise have been unable to go.

He makes regular visits to hospitals and nursing homes to check on members of the community and to homes of those who are sick and shut in.

Ennis and his wife are the parents of two sons and grandparents of five grandchildren.

Ennis has led by example and has shown others the true meaning of Hometown Leader.
