Schools hope to grow program at middle and high school level

VICTORIA – On January 9th, FIRST Robotics held the kick off for competition season at VCU. The Portable Chargers, the new CHS team, picked up its kit to build a robot. Students started this week organizing and inventorying the kit as well as organizing the tools. They are set to start building before the end of the week.

Mid-Atlantic Broadband Corporation has generously donated start-up funds, including registration fees, for the team. Benchmark Community Bank and Virginia Marble have donated funds to the team, and ACE Kenbridge Supply has donated tools for the team.

Jeremy Satterfield, who serves as Business Development Manager for Mid-Atlantic Broadband, recently spoke to the LCPS School Board and noted that his company is excited about the chance to help the robotics team take off in Lunenburg. He recognized Central High School teacher Mark Bailey for stepping up to take on the leadership role for the CHS Robotics team. In addition to that, Mid-Atlantic Broadband announced that they would match all of the funds raised by the CHS team up to an additional $4,000.

LCPS noted the generosity from Mid-Atlantic and other companies in getting this program off the ground and indicated that the hope is to continue working toward having robotics programs at Lunenburg Middle School and Central High School in the future.

The first competition is scheduled to be held in March. Look for additional information on competitions in coming weeks.
