LUNENBURG – The Central Chargers varsity basketball team hosted Nottoway last week in a James River District contest and an early deficit proved to be more than Central could overcome as the Cougars cruised to a 52-37 win.

The Chargers had a tough shooting first quarter as Raymond Alexander (4 points) and Daryl Jones (4 points) were the only two players to score for CHS. Nottoway had a little better offensive quarter and took an early 14-8 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same as Alexander was the only Charger to get his shots to fall and he accounted for all eight of the Central points. Nottoway headed to halftime with a 31-16 lead.

To their credit Central continued to play hard and briefly cut into the Nottoway lead, but a late surge by the Cougars had them with a 41-24 lead going to the final quarter.

Central continued to battle and actually cut the lead to ten with just over two minutes left to play, but Nottoway hit free throws down the stretch as Central was forced to foul and came away with the 52-37 win.

Alexander led Central with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Jones scored 12 points on the night. LJ Watson scored 4 points and Tylik Thomas added 2 points.
