Chargers control Nottoway From Start to Finish in Rivalry Win

The Central Chargers had to wait a few extra days to play the Nottoway Cougars on the gridiron, but for the team and their fans, it was worth the wait as Central controlled the game from start to finish and took a 38-18 win.

FB--CHS trophyCentral would go 3 and 0 on their first series, but the defense would block a Nottoway punt on their first defensive series as Dion Graham got his hand on the kick and Daveyon Rainey recovered the ball. Central didn’t waste time getting on the board as they would run on four straight plays and Dashawn Moore scored from two yards away. Ben Atkins was good on the extra point and Central took a 7-0 lead.

The Central defense would step up big on the next series with Kester Long and Brandon Williams having big stops. The Chargers would pick up a pair of first downs, but an interception gave Nottoway the ball back. The Cougars would get their first score of the game on a 20 yard pass from Vaughan Robertson to Marqueis Walton, but Rainey would stop the two point try and Central still led by one point.

Nottoway would fumble a handoff early in the second quarter and Central’s Michael Wright recovered the ball. The Chargers would get a 17-yard touchdown pass from Josh Paynter to Raymond Alexander to push them ahead 14-6 late in the second quarter.

The CHS defense would come up with a big stop on fourth down right before halftime and the Chargers would get a 10-yard field goal from Atkins to go to the half with a 17-6 lead.

Nottoway responded in the second half early on as Thomas Parrish ripped off a 20-yard touchdown run, but Ben Spencer, Chris Fowler and Tyler Williams made the stop on the two point conversion to keep the Central lead at 17-12.

Central would have a great drive on the next offensive series as they had 10 straight runs and used the strength of their offensive line that includes Jackson Parsons, Daniel Wilkinson, Bayden Bishop and Jamori Pegram to drive down the field. Moore would race in from 8 yards away and the Chargers took a 24-12 lead.

Nottoway would answer back as Parrish scored his second touchdown on a 34 yard run, but Central would get a stop on the two point conversion from Brandon Scott and Dion Graham.

The Chargers would get another big play late in the game as Brandon Williams blocked a punt and recovered it to give Central the ball at the Nottoway 14 yard line. Rainey would score on the first play of the series as he raced in from 14 yards away to give Central a 31-18 lead.

Central would add a late score as Malik Foster raced in from 30 yards away to make the final 38-18 in favor of the Chargers.

Central will have a bye week next Friday before traveling to Bluestone on October 16.
