Traffic was reduced to one lane on Route 15 outside of Farmville last Friday night when a 2005 Maxima driven by Robert T. Watson swerved into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head on. Mr. Watson was traveling north on Route 15 and swerved to miss a Ford Explorer driven by Will Ferrell that was turning left on Abilene Road. The Maxima glanced off of the Explorer trying to avoid it and struck a Chevrolet Sedan traveling south head on. The Chevrolet was driven by Walter Hines of Meherrin, Virginia. After striking Mr. Hines’ car the Maxima skidded into the parking lot of Worsham Grocery, hitting yet another vehicle that was sitting at the gas pumps. Mr. Ferrell is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and was coming up from Columbia, South Carolina with his sister, Lee, “to watch the game,” according to Mr. Ferrell. “I could see that he wasn’t going to stop, and I tried to get out of the way,” he said. The owner of the car sitting at the gas pumps, Ms. Aruell Lee, was inside of the store at the time of the accident. She was not hurt. There was little to no visual evidence of damage done to the gas pumps, fortunately. However, more than one bystander spoke of the number of accidents that have occurred at this particular intersection. Several county law enforcement units were dispatched to control traffic at the scene, and fire and rescue units also responded. Virginia State Police Trooper Morgan investigated the accident, in which the driver of the Maxima was transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries to his leg. There were no other injuries reported at the scene.
“Mr. Hines is extremely fortunate,” Trooper Morgan told The Southside Messenger at the scene, speaking of the driver that was hit head on. “This accident could have turned out much worse than it did.” Charges were pending at the time of the article.
