Centra’s Orthopaedic Programs Reaccredited

Centra’s orthopaedic total hip and total knee replacement programs have received reaccreditation from The Joint Commission.

“By 2015, Baby Boomers will represent more than 45% of the U.S population,” said Peter Caprise, M.D., Medical Director of OCCVA. “These 50-60 year old Boomers are electing to receive knee and hip replacements earlier in life to sustain the active lifestyles they have come to count on. We have felt the increase in demand for joint replacement services in our area already and expect to see that trend continue. Having a highly trained staff that’s part of an accredited program should give patients the peace of mind they need as they make their way through the process of initial clinical assessments to post-operative care. “

The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting accrediting body in health has recommended both programs receive reaccreditation status. Certification requirements for joint replacement programs address three areas: compliance with national standards, effective and consistent use of evidence-based clinical guidelines for joint replacements and the collection and analysis of performance measurement data. To maintain certification, Centra participates in an on-site review conducted every two years.

“This reaccreditation demonstrates Centra’s commitment to high standards of quality patient care and safety,” said Beth Bankston, Centra Vice President of Orthopaedic, Neurosciences and General Surgery services. “Our physicians, nurses and staff follow an incredibly rigorous set of protocols for orthopaedic patients and this recognition shows that we are constantly evaluating our program for ways to improve. We have a unique program here as we have such tremendous teamwork between our nursing units, the operating room, and our relationship with the Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia, infection/prevention control and our case management department.”
