LUNENBURG – Central High School Assistant Principal Natalie Coronas recently addressed the Lunenburg County School Board about a new project idea at her school.

The idea is to upgrade the area behind Central that currently houses the outdoor patio. This a section between two parts of the building in the rear of the school near the office. There is currently a concrete slab patio that is used by students during lunch when they go outside.

Ms. Coronas said that the upgrades would include additional seating with picnic tables, Shade Sails in purple and gold colors to create a shaded area and eventually a courtyard with a gazebo and brick walkways out to the parking lot.

She would go on to on to point out that the students enjoy the ability to “go outside and get some fresh air during lunch” and that it would also make for an attractive area in the back of the school.

The area could also be used by teachers during free periods and visitors to the school who may want to sit outside.

The project is expected to cost around $15,000 and a large portion of the work, such as the gazebo and tables, could be built by the students. The school plans to use partnerships with businesses, community donations and fundraisers to raise the money. Another idea is to have bricks bought and dedicated to people or classes similar to streetscape projects done by the local towns.

Ms. Coronas said that the project would be done in phases as funding was available and it would not require funding from the current school budget. School board members approved the idea and project.
