LUNENBURG – The Central Chargers Varsity basketball team held senior night on Monday and hoped to give their three seniors (Raymond Alexander, Tylik Thomas, DaQuan Cleaton) a victory, but Randolph-Henry played the spoiler in a game that came down to the final minute.
Central played well early on and took a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. LJ Watson led the team with a pair of three pointers, while R-H got 5 early points from Jordan Jones.
The second quarter was more of the same, with senior Raymond Alexander scoring 5 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in the quarter to help give Central a 27-21 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw R-H turn up the defense and force several turnovers while Tremaine Pugh and Nasheim Pettus added 10 points between them to make the score 36-34 heading to the fourth quarter.
The game would stay close throughout the final period with Watson, Daryl Jones and Thomas hitting several key buckets for Central. Jones continued to play well and Pettus came up with the big plays of the game. After hitting the first free throw of a one and one, Pettus rebounded his second miss and this led to another foul. He then stole a rebound from Central and that sealed a 53-49 victory for the Statesmen.
Central was led in scoring by Watson with 17 points, Jones with 14 and Alexander who had 11 points and 16 rebounds on the night.
R-H was led by Jones with 25 points, Pugh with 12 points, Pettus with 11 points and Jesse Redd with 8 points.
