Central students participateFARMVILLE – Earlier this year in February, Dr. Maurice Carter came to visit the minority male students who attend Central High School to talk about the “Call Me Mister” program. The “Call Me Mister” program is for minority males that want to go to college or a university. The mission of this program is to “increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background. Dr. Carter is a professor at Longwood University in Farmville.

During these initial talks, Dr. Carter gave the background story of his life and used it as a lesson to the audience. He encouraged young males to make something of themselves rather than being in the streets and behind bars. Carter also stressed that out of the approximately 900,000 teachers in the state of Virginia; only five hundred are minority males.

A pair of senior students at Central High School this year, Raymond Alexander and Dion Graham, participated in the Call Me Mister Summer Institute this summer.

The Central duo made an impression on Dr. Carter during their time with the program. He stated, “The young men were exceptional and their leadership was exemplary to the entire institute. I believe you have two young men who may become educators and return to Luneburg to teach. Thank you for your support of the program and we look forward to others participating in the Call Me MISTER Program in the future.”

Dr. Carter contacted Lunenburg County School Superintendent Charles Berkley to further express his appreciation for the participation in the program by these two students as well as for the support from Lunenburg for the program.
