Central High Prom Preview/Fashion Show Fundraiser This Sunday

Mark your calendars! On Sunday, March 1st at 3 p.m., Central High School in Victoria, Va. will present their annual Prom Preview/Fashion Show as a benefit to help raise money for their prom and after prom event.  The spring fashion show will feature Central athletes, faculty and future and past Chargers hitting the runway to model the latest fashions for adults, children and students!

“We started the show in 1998 as an alternative fund raiser for the cheerleading squad. We realized early that establishing a trusting relationship with the businesses was the most important aspect,” said Jean Kunath, Central High School Cheer Coach.  According to Kunath, each year, numerous businesses loan clothing items out to be modeled in the fashion show.  This year, the show will feature “casual guys’ athletic wear from Hibbetts of South Hill, Va.; adult, children, guy and girl’s spring fashions from Peebles in South Hill, Va.; casual wear and prom gowns from Entwined of Blackstone, Va.; casual wear from Catos in South Hill, Va.; prom gowns and casual wear from Dillards of Short Pump, Va.; casual wear from Fabrik of Carytown in Richmond, Va.; prom gowns and tuxedos from Caryn’s Bridals, Formals & Tuxedos in Farmville, Va.”

Although getting to sashay down the catwalk in beautiful, new attire can be a liberating experience, great care is taken to ensure that the clothing items are protected and returned in the same condition they were received.  “The care and safety of the clothing we were borrowing was our main priority from the beginning,” commented Kunath. “I vividly remember Nancy Lafoon, a former cheer coach and parent, starting the tradition of covering the entire locker room and steps with paper to ensure the protection of the gowns.  We have continued this care throughout the years with help from numerous helpful parent and teachers.”

Each year, the Spring Fashion Show does a great job of bringing together the Charger community by serving as a fun way to help give back to the students for their hard work and contributions.  Kunath explained that one of the most exciting parts of the entire event is watching individuals who do not consider themselves to be models take part in the show.  “When we started donating a portion of the proceeds to the prom and after prom, I was able to persuade a large number of student athletes to serve as the models,” said Kunath. “We start with fall season sports and move to winter and spring. Athletes that have represented our school positively during the school year are asked to model the clothes. There is some reluctance from the athletes to model initially, yet they willingly agree to assist with our endeavor.”

The Prom Preview/Spring Fashion Show 2015 will feature two additional categories titled “Prom Gowns from the Past” and “Recycled Runway.”  “Several girls will be modeling gowns worn years ago by friends and family members to special events,” noted Kunath.  “We are also ecstatic to showcase student designer Jonathan Clarke during the “Recycled Runway” portion. Jonathan has created four gowns from various materials and they are truly incredible works of art.”

Last year, around $900.00 was raised during the event; however, in previous years, the Central Chargers have earned as much as $1,300.00 from their spring fashion show.  “We hope that the community will come out and support this event on Sunday afternoon and enjoy seeing our athletes modeling these incredible styles from all of these businesses,” commented Kunath.

The show will take place in the Central High School Gymnatorium.  Tickets are $3.00 in advance and $5.00 at the door.
