Carry the LoadThe “Carry The Load” organization is in the process of making their 2,100-mile journey from West Point Cemetery to Dallas, Texas. Carry The Load is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing active, meaningful ways to honor and celebrate the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes — military, law enforcement, firefighters and first responders.

During this journey, the group traveled through the Kenbridge area on May 10th around 2 am. They came from Blackstone and passed through Craig Mill Road and Sneads Store Road, on there way to South Hill and into North Carolina.

The trip is set up with great respect and reverence, as it begins at West Point Cemetery within the nation’s Military Academy and continues into downtown Manhattan visiting the historic 9/11 Memorial and reflecting pools, Freedom Tower and Rescue 5 fire station. The Relay weaves through the northeast and features American landmarks such as Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, Liberty Bell and the United States Naval Academy. The East Coast journey passes through the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas before the home stretch into Texas where it culminates at the Dallas Memorial March on Memorial Day Weekend.

Carry The Load was co-founded by Clint Bruce and Stephen Holley. It all started when Bruce, a former Navy SEAL and war veteran, was sitting at a barbecue on Memorial Day. As he thought about the friends he lost in combat, he couldn’t help but notice that the people around him had a very different view of what Memorial Day meant.

This organization was started as a mission to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day and has broadened to include more than just military heroes and more than just the one holiday. The idea also includes educating youth on the history of the American flag and the sacrifices made to honor it.
