Carry it Right

How will you carry your baby once he is here?  It may seem like a silly question at first, but given a little thought, you will realize the importance of it.

logo-wee-notesHolding and/or carrying your infant can become critical should he have the need to be held more than you thought he would.  If you tend to have back pain, holding or carrying your baby for long periods of time can be agonizing.

Will you purchase a pull apart car seat that will allow you to move your baby from the car, into a store and then into a shopping cart without removing him from the seat?

These can be very heavy and awkward.  Lifting the seat into the cart can add even more stress and strain on back muscles, especially in the lower back.

Do some thinking about what you may need in the way of relief when holding, carrying, and lifting your new baby.  A quick search of the internet will amaze you when perusing available information on the many options you have.

Not only is there a variety of colors and styles, but also costs.  Keep in mind the need for most infants to be in close contact with caregivers.  What is the weather going to be when you first bring him home?  If you tend to be cold natured, you might enjoy the extra warmth provided by a bulkier carrier.  However, should the season be scorching, you will probably be better off to choose a lighter weight carrier that will go on and off with little struggling.

Will you want or need to wash your carrier?  If your baby has reflux or just tends to spit up a little after eating, you might look for a carrier that has removable cover for ease in laundering.  Will you be breastfeeding?  Think about when, where, and what the needs of you and your baby will be during feedings.

When considering cost, you certainly have choices there, too.  Some of the considerations can include whether you enjoy walking, if you have other small children you will need to assist while holding your wee one.  If you enjoy hiking, a good carrier is a necessity for mom, dad, and infant.

Baby carriers come in styles that allow your baby to face you, to face forward, or to move from one to the other.  There are also models that cuddle the baby as though you are cradling him in your arms.

Consider spending time reading the packaging on some styles that appear to work for you and pick several that seem to meet your and your infant’s personal needs and preferences.  Try them on paying attention to the ease of getting it and the baby placed correctly and safely.  Does it fit comfortably?  Is it affordable for you?  Does your baby seem to feel secure in it?  Will it grow with your baby?  Is it washable?  All of these things are important to consider when making this purchase.  Be wise in all areas.
