 Capitalism 101

Our President just normalized relations with Cuba. On the surface it sounds good but it is just another case of rhetoric surpassing fact. Another case of politics  replacing substance.  It is like passing a resolution against hunger or slavery or anything else and doing nothing else to alleviate the problem.

logo- government grumblingsTo most people normal is good. They expect normality and strive for normality.  So when you can claim you have normalized anything, they think it is good.

Since before the Bay of Pig’s botched invasion Cuban dissidents have worked for democracy for Cuba. They have pledged their “Lives, Fortunes, and sacred Honor” to the battle. They have endured oppression, jail and poverty for almost half a century. Then just as their efforts are showing progress our President pulls the rug out from under them.

It is a fact. Capitalism works and communism doesn’t.  Communism can only work if there are capitalists to pay for it.  It doesn’t take a war to end communism; all it takes is for the capitalists to quit supporting it.

Don’t believe me? Look at the old USSR. It didn’t take a war; all it took was letting communism run its course.

Like all communist countries, The Castro brothers’ brand of communism is more like slavery.  The Cuban people work and are paid at a rate determined by the Castro’s. Then the products they produce are sold at a price determined by the Castro’s who keep the profit.

Communism in Cuba was dying a natural death as will all communist regimes.  Instead of assisting at the death or bringing in Hospice to make the transition easier, our President put Cuba on life support.  Our president single handedly extended the life of communist Cuba. The deed is done, it can’t be revoked, Communist Cuba will survive for a few more years or decades thanks to this decision. The only real question is, why would he do it?

On a similar note, several of my bright young friends and relatives are getting all cranked up about the inequities of capitalism.  They want change.  Actually, I am proud of them. They are getting involved and are thinking.  Time and experience will moderate their views.  They will one day notice there is more inequity between the ruling class in communism and the serfs than in capitalism.

Some day (if they continue thinking) these bright young folks will realize that taking money from the people who earn it to give to those who don’t is wrong.  It is wrong when the Castro’s take it from the working people and give it to themselves and their cronies and it is wrong to take it from those that some self-appointed equalizer decides have too much to give to someone else.

We live in the greatest country on earth. One of our founding principles is the opportunity to succeed.  There are will always be inequities. The important thing is to give everyone the opportunity to succeed to the best of their abilities and ambition.
