The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors have gone back and forth on the subject of whether or not to place cameras at the Lunenburg Convenience site locations.

A few incidents have taken place that have caused damage at some locations including vehicles tearing up the gravel, tires being illegally dumped and other dumping issues that have led to costing the county money.

Recently there were tracking collars stolen and thrown into on of the compactors and without any video proof there was no way of attempting to get a conviction.

The group had tabled the issue last month after the Landfill Committee came back with a recommendation that there did not seem to be a need for the cameras at this time.

However, this most recent issue had the group rethinking the issue.  Supervisor Wayne Hoover, who has been in favor of adding cameras to the sites, said that he had procured a price of $930.92 that included the camera’s recording equipment and signage.

Supervisor Frank Bacon stated, “To me $1,000 is nothing compared to protecting something we are spending $200,000 to build.”

Supervisor Bob Zava also weighed in on the subject and stated, “We are always going to have different problems.” He went on to talk about dumping oil or other things that could cost the county to clean up or have removed. He would note that with the cameras it would offer a form of evidence so that culprits could be prosecuted.

The group eventually voted on having cameras placed at convenience sites in order to help monitor the locations and offer an ability to keep watch on locations when they are not manned.
