Deputies of the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the Darlington Heights area on Tuesday for a reported break-in. When officers arrived, they discovered that a would-be burglar had cut a hole through the wall of the house and into a bedroom. It appears that the burglar spent some time removing the siding, cutting away the plywood underneath, and then cutting the sheetrock on the inside, all in a failed attempt to outsmart an alarm system. Officers indicated that when the burglar reached through the hole, the alarm sounded, chasing the burglar away before they even entered the home. The Virginia State Police responded with a tracking dog and tracked the trail into the woods, through a neighbor’s yard and back out to Darlington Heights Road. The dog then lost the trail. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Prince Edward County Crimesolvers at 434-392-3400.
