Block Versus Seven-Period School Schedules Examined Through Surveys

LUNENBURG – After discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the block scheduling that is currently used at Central High School versus having a seven-period day that would see the same seven classes run throughout the year, the local schools  are set to release a survey and take the next step in examining this issue.

Lunenburg County Schools Superintendent Charles Berkley stated, “We have been discussing this for several years and we now have a survey ready to send out and put on our website that students, staff and parents can fill out.”

He continued on to say that one of the concerns with block scheduling is missed time in the winter/spring semester. Generally there is very little time missed as a result of inclement weather in the fall portion of the class schedules, but last year there were nine days missed in the second semester and there is some concern that this could cause issues for the students in that part of the year.

He also noted that there could be an A-B schedule used in the seven-period scenario where students would rotate classes on different days. There is also discussion regarding having some classes such as the sciences that use labs having two credits.

Mr. Berkley continued, “I know as a student I would find it difficult to have a math class in the fall and then maybe not have another one until the following year. I would lose some retention on the subject.”

He stated, “This is not saying we are going to do this or not, but we are just looking to see which way everyone feels is best. There are pros and cons, negatives and positives for both systems.”

Mr. Berkley said that this is a way to continue discussions to see what would be best for the students. He noted that high school students would likely be brought in later this year  to discuss these options. The students currently use block scheduling at the high school, but at middle school they have the same classes all year long.

Look for additional information and surveys on the school website that can be found at lunenburgcountyschools.org.
