Assault Suspect Arrested After Two-Day Manhunt

On Saturday, April 5th at approximately 12:15 p.m., Virginia State Trooper J.D. Gregory was approached by an individual in a pickup truck stating that his sister (who was also in the truck) had been assaulted by her boyfriend.

Mark Steven LewisAccording to the victim, her boyfriend, Mark Steven Lewis, 54, had placed a shotgun in her mouth at their Red Oak, Virginia residence and threatened to kill her.

Trooper Gregory sent the victim to the Charlotte County Magistrate, where she obtained warrants for assault and battery as well as brandishing a firearm.

In the meantime, officers began staging at a location in the Red Oak area before heading to the residence that the victim and suspect shared.

Upon arriving at the 8780 Barnesville Hwy. residence, the suspect was seen in the distance, across a field on a tractor. Before officers could catch up to him, the suspect escaped into a wooded area.

The area was searched for several hours using a Virginia State Police Aviation Unit, two canine units, a State Police tactical team, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Department and Conservation Police Officers from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

In addition, a search warrant was executed on the residence and a shotgun matching the description of the weapon used in the incident was seized.

The suspect remained at large until Monday morning when he turned himself in at the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, accompanied by his lawyer.

Virginia State Trooper J.D. Gregory was the investigating officer in the incident.
