On February 9, 2014 at approximately 12:18 am Officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of High Street for a report of an arson to an off campus residential house for Longwood University students. A student discovered the fire at the corner of the residence and was able to put the fire out before it spread, causing burns to his hands.
Officers were able to determine that the residents of that house were having a party with approximately 75 people in the structure when one of the guests was asked to leave for trying to start fights with other people. Shortly after this suspect and his girlfriend left the party the fire was discovered. After interviewing witnesses and obtaining other evidence detectives were able to arrest Patrick Orville Amick, 25, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Brianna C. Person, 20, of Sutherland, Virginia. Amick is in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bragg and Person is a student of Longwood University. Both are charged with Arson to an Occupied Dwelling, which is a felony punishable by up to life in prison. Amick is being held under no bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center in North Carolina pending extradition to Virginia. Person is being held without bond in the Piedmont Regional Jail. Farmville Police were assisted by Longwood University Police during this investigation.
