On Saturday, June 14, Hooper Park in Crewe was packed tight with blues music enthusiasts from around the state of Virginia.  The event lasted from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. and was sponsored by the Keysville Fire Department.  A variety of musical acts and vendors were in attendance all afternoon to get the crowd going as they danced the night away.

Attendees were in for some great talent headliners with special performances by blues artists Lacee, Black Diamond and Southside Virginia’s very own Big G! Lacy Yvonne Reed aka Lacee, a Memphis born singer who released her first album in 2006 with Loveland Records, swayed the crowd with her soulful vocals.  Black Diamond, a group consisting of Wilson, NC natives, hyped up the crowd with their danceable covers and original tunes.  Being on his home turf, Big G really hit a home run with some of his most familiar songs, including his recent hit “Last Paycheck.”

According to the Stone River Records website, “Big G was born in Charlotte County, Virginia. He grew up singing and playing the lead and bass guitar in church. He grew up listening to all types of music but southern soul music made him what he is today. Influenced by such artists as Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge, Tyrone Davis, Roy C, he started singing old school R&B back in the 1970′s.” Big G has shared the stage with Bobby Blue Bland, Marvin Sease, Millie Jackson, Shirley Brown, Mel Waiters, Roy C and Clarence Carter.
