2 Juveniles Escape from Piedmont; Caught the Same Day

On August 2, 2014 at approximately 6:15 a.m., three juveniles attempted to escape from the Piedmont Juvenile Detention Center in Prince Edward County.  Two of the three were able to escape the facility.  The third juvenile was detained by Staff prior to exiting the building.  According to Lieutenant Hurak with the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, force had been used to initiate the escape that had been planned in advance.

The two juveniles that did escape will be charged.  Juvenile #1, black male, age 17 will be charged with Escape, conspiracy to Escape, Felony Assault and Battery, and conspiracy to commit Felony Assault and Battery.  Juvenile #2, white male, age 17 will be charged with Escape, conspiracy to Escape and conspiracy to commit Felony Assault and Battery.  Juvenile #3, white male, age 15 will be charged with attempted Escape, conspiracy to Escape and Felony Assault and Battery.  Juveniles #1 and #2 will also be charged with Breaking and Entering and Grand Larceny from a residence in Prince Edward Co..

Several agencies assisted with the search.  Sheriff Wesley Reed stated that members from his office, the Farmville Police Department, the Virginia State Police (including Troopers and Supervisor BCI, Tactical Unit, K-9 Unit and the Aviation Division), the Virginia Department of Corrections K-9 Units, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Conservation and Recreation Police and the Longwood University Police.  Sheriff Reed also stated that the two juveniles were apprehended at approximately 12:35 p.m. the same day.  Sheriff Reed added that the K-9 units from the Department of Corrections and the Virginia State Police, the Aviation Division Unit from the Virginia State Police were instrumental in the apprehension and capture of the escapees.

During the search for the two escapees, calls came into the Farmville Communication Center and the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office reporting possible sightings of the two.  Sheriff Reed said, “I want to thank the citizens of Prince Edward County for reporting suspicious people and or activity during this incident.  It is important for us to have involvement from the community.”
