Last night vice presidential candidates Kaine and Pence were featured in what was called a debate.
I’ve attended bar fights that were more civilized. This isn’t a criticism of the debate process. This isn’t a criticism of the questions. The voters needed to know the answers BUT we didn’t get much.
According to one analysis Kaine interrupted Pense 70 times during the debate. Pense interrupted Kaine 40 times. If this were a high school debate both would have been disqualified.
110 interruptions are what I would expect from a kindergarten class, not from two men running for the second highest office in America.
What has happened to civil discourse in America? Do we want men and women who can’t follow a few simple rules to be running the most powerful country in the world?
There is an easy solution to this problem for future debates. When one candidate interrupts the other just give the “interruptee” another minute to talk to be used at his or her discretion. If the interrupter ignores the moderator add another minute. Finally, allow the candidate who interrupts the fewest times to have the final statement.
Then maybe our candidates would act like dignified adults rather than school children.
