Phenix Family Offers Reward for Return of Pet

Last Monday morning at dawn, Mollie Griffith went out to feed her family of pigs when she noticed that Daddy Garcia was missing in action. However, Mollie didn’t think much of it because she assumed that Garcia was probably getting his beauty rest and would be up later to get breakfast.

GarciaAt around 8:30 a.m., Griffith received a call that Garcia had been spotted making his way down 727 in Phenix and police had herded him down Whites Chapel Road. She quickly proceeded to look for the wandering animal, but he was nowhere in sight.

Over a week has passed since anyone has seen the hog and in hopes of recovering their beloved pig, the Griffith family is now offering a reward of $1,000 for his safe return.

Mollie explains that her 12-year-old daughter, Katie Griffith, is actually the owner of the pig and had saved her money to buy him last April. He just turned two on August 17.

While Garcia is primarily used as a breeding pig, he is also considered a pet by the family and has been babied by humans all his life. If he isn’t found, although it will be heartbreaking for the Griffiths, young Katie has determined that it will not deter her and she will go right back to breeding.

Garcia comes from an impressive heritage of hogs: the Gloucestershire Old Spots, an endangered rare breed from England well suited to being pastured. Old Spots are identified by their white coat and clearly defined black spots. All Gloucesters must have at least one spot on the body to be added to the registry.

If anyone has any information regarding Garcia, please call Charlotte County Animal Control at (434) 542-5117 or the Griffith family at (434) 665-5246.
